Thom graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Economics in 1988 where he was also on the Varsity Crew team. With a background in computer programming and networking, Thom joined Microsoft in 1990. He worked on several important early phase projects such as Windows NT, Microsoft Exchange and created the first version of Outlook Web Access.
In 1997, Thom's entrepreneurial instincts took him into the restaurant business as owner of Charlie's at Shilshole and El Nino Restaurant. As an employer of 60 people, Thom worked hard to ensure the survival of his businesses through economic downturns and difficult business conditions. Due to Port development projects, Charlie's closed in 2004.
Thom is currently self-employed as a technology consultant. He grew up in Philadelphia but moved to Seattle to attend the UW in 1984. He has travelled extensively throughout the world, visiting over 30 countries. He has a first hand account of the value of trade to various economies.
As owner of Charlie's at Shilshole, Thom was a business tenant of the Port of Seattle where he gained direct experience and insight into Port's practices. This exposure has driven him to seek changes in the Port Commission. In 2005, Thom worked to support reform candidates. In 2007, Thom ran for Port Commissioner and intends to replace Pat Davis in the 2009 election.
