"It's time to establish a new level of efficiency, accountability and transparency at the Port of Seattle."

Profile: Thom McCann

Thom graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics in 1988 where he was also on the Varsity Crew team. With a background in computer programming and networking, Thom joined Microsoft in 1990. He worked on several important early phase projects such as Windows NT. After creating the first version of Outlook Web Access, Thom moved on from Microsoft in 1997.

Thom's entrepreneurial instincts took him into the restaurant business as owner of Charlie's at Shilshole and El Nino Restaurant. As an employer of 60 people, Thom worked hard to ensure the survival of his businesses through economic downturns and difficult business conditions. Due to Port development projects, Charlie's closed in 2004. At that time, Thom also sold El Nino Restaurant.

Thom is currently self-employed as an independent investor. Thom grew up in Philadelphia but moved to Seattle to attend the University of Washington in 1984. He has travelled extensively throughout the world, visiting over 30 countries. He has a first hand account of the value of trade to various economies.

Drive for Change at the Port

As owner of Charlie's at Shilshole, Thom was a business tenant of the Port of Seattle where he gained direct experience and insight into Port business practices. This exposure has driven him to seek changes in the Port Commission. In 2005, Thom worked independently to support reform candidates. This year Thom is running against an established incumbent to continue that reform.
