"It's time to establish a new level of efficiency, accountability and transparency at the Port of Seattle."
The Port of Seattle affects our lives in many ways. The Port manages SeaTac airport, the container operations facilities in Seattle, some of the region's marinas such as Fisherman's Terminal and Shilshole Bay Marina as well as other terminals and real estate properties in King County. Whether you travel through the airport, work for a locally based company or go fishing in Puget Sound, your activities are affected by Port decisions. At the hub of the decision approval process is the Port of Seattle Commission, composed of five members elected by the voters of King County.
If you own property in King County, you pay taxes to the Port of Seattle. This campaign will shine a bright light on the way the Port currently spends your money. The Port is not only a steward of tax dollars, it also has a responsibility to manage key community resources. We will establish a new level of efficiency, accountability and transparency in all port operations.
In the 2007 election cycle there are two seats open for election. I will be running against an established two-term opponent who is not committed to reform. It will be an uphill task to unseat an incumbent that will be supported by the Port staff and its support network. However, I intend to work hard and win this election. As a registered King County voter, your most important form of input is to vote for the Commission members.
The current makeup of the commission has John Creighton as President. John was elected in 2005 and has done an excellent job prioritizing environmental issues. Alec Fisken (elected in 2003) and Lloyd Hara (2005) are the reform-minded members of the Commission that seek to scrutinize the questionable spending methods at the Port. Pat Davis (1985) and Bob Edwards (1999) are long time supporters of Port staff and the former CEO. It is important to unseat Mr. Edwards and support Mr. Fisken in this election cycle to bring about true change.
