"It's time to establish a new level of efficiency, accountability and transparency at the Port of Seattle."
I have a vision that the Port of Seattle, like other ports in the US, is run efficiently without a tax subsidy. It will also become a worldwide leader in addressing port and maritime environmental issues. In this trade dependent region, the Port should be focused on its core mission of providing a working infrastructure for trade and family wage jobs.
The case for reform is clear to many who watch the port closely. As Port Commissioner, I will ensure transparency in Port operations. As a former business tenant of the Port of Seattle, I have a first hand view of how to stop dubious Port transactions.
We have an excellent opportunity to become a worldwide leader in environmental stewardship. With a great local history of environmental action, we can affect change on a global level. Our agricultural resources combined with our active regional ports should be promoting the use of alternative energy and biofuels to reduce port operation and maritime emissions.
In the Puget Sound, the Port needs to lead local, state and federal governments on a more complete approach to resolving pollution problems at the port and drainage sources to Elliot Bay.
The original mission of the Port is to enhance our regional economy through trade. The Port has undertaken projects which dilute this goal. A working port provides better quality jobs and we must re-focus our efforts to this end. We must also re-double our efforts to improve security at our regional port operations.
Since my opponent took office, the Port has doubled the tax it collects from King County property owners. He has voted for the increases while proclaiming he cut taxes. The Port has a dual role as a manager of businesses and community resources. Since annual revenue from various Port businesses exceeds $420 million, it should not require annual property tax. Most other ports in the US do not require such a tax subsidy and some even provide revenue for the county.
The Port of Seattle is an important partner in solving key transportation problems in the region. We must resist the temptation for risky and expensive solutions such as the tunnel replacement for the viaduct. The Port must work more closely with other regional governments to improve transportation and other capital improvements.
I am against Port ownership of Boeing Field as currently proposed. As a Boeing Field neighbor living in Beacon Hill, I am concerned for the nearby community. The Port's past history has community leaders concerned about its plans and its openness to feedback. Boeing field may also expose the Port to financial liability due to environmental concerns. This deal has too many open questions to move forward at this time.
Thom McCann is focused on delivering a new reform majority to the Port Commission. This is the critical time to make changes!
